Eating Disorders and Trauma

Anorexia, bulimia, emotional overeating and binge-eating disorders are all severely on the rise. Body image disturbance is today's norm and causes constant uneasiness and discomfort around one's body. Treatment is often aimed at changing the behaviors associated with eating disorders. At New Beginning, we unconditionally accept people with all types of eating disorders and help you uncover the reasons your eating disorder began, as well as the reasons your eating continues to be imbalanced. Our goal is not weight gain or weight loss; it is to help you understand why you have an eating disorder, and how to help your life be in balance without disordered eating.

Eating disorders are a symptom of underlying emotional issues. They represent a form of coping that at the time seems like the only alternative. The external goal of eating disorders feels weight and body size related, but the internal goal is to numb emotionally overwhelming feelings. At New Beginning, we help you to uncover the situations that for you have been emotionally overwhelming. We help you to understand how the brain processes these overwhelming events, and how and why behaviors like eating disorders develop.

Trauma is defined as any life experience that is emotionally overwhelming to the point that it changes your view of yourself and your world. Adult survivors of childhood trauma often suffer from depression, eating disorders, substance abuse and other emotional problems. Defenses formed enable the survivor to cope, but often become self-defeating patterns. This program helps you to discover what has been traumatic in your lifetime, and even helps to identify "normalized" traumas. Our goal is to help you find balance, peace and serenity.
